70 Years of Building, Serving and Growing: Celebrating CDF's Anniversary
August 19, 2026

In 1956, a priest with a vision and a community with faith came together to solve a problem. Catholic schools across Melbourne were overflowing. Families were growing. Government funding for Catholic education was simply unavailable. And so Fr James Wall, later honoured with the title 'Father of the Funds', established what he called the Schools Provident Fund (SPF): a new way for the Catholic community to pool its resources, invest in its future, and care for one another.

The very first school funded through that vision was Sacred Heart Parish Primary School in Preston, Victoria, which opened in 1957 and became an instant success, laying the framework for what would follow. The movement spread across Australia and New Zealand, growing from a solution for Catholic schools into a broader vehicle for funding parishes, hospitals, aged care and social services.

Seventy years later, that vision is very much alive.

From humble beginnings to billions under management

What began with a single school loan, has grown into something Fr Wall could scarcely have imagined.

Today, CDF manages almost $5 billion in funds, supporting thousands of loans each year across Catholic organisations, and partners with communities spanning Dioceses across Australia.

In FY25 alone, CDF funded $580 million in new loans - directly supporting schools, parishes, aged care facilities, social housing, health services and more. Behind every number is a community: a school that opened its doors, a family that found a home, a parish that could finally build the space it had long dreamed of, a hospital bed proving comfort in times of need.

A purpose for the next 70 years

As CDF marks this milestone, we have also been reflecting on what we are here to do, not just for today, but for the generations ahead.

Our purpose: To be the trusted financial services partner, empowering Catholic organisations and communities to build, serve and grow.

Those three words, 'build, serve and grow' are not new. They describe what Fr Wall set out to do in 1956, and what the Catholic community has been doing through CDF ever since. In our most recent annual customer satisfaction survey, CDF achieved a Net Promoter Score of +50 and a Trust Index of +57; a reflection of what seven decades of faithful stewardship and partnership looks like in practice.

CEO John McClusky reflects on what the anniversary means and what lies ahead:

"Celebrating 70 years is about more than looking back on our history. It is about recognising the trust that Catholic organisations and communities have placed in CDF for seven decades and renewing our commitment to the future. As we look ahead, CDF will continue to evolve with purpose, helping fund the next generation of Catholic schools, health, aged care and social services - while offering investors the opportunity to support the mission they make possible."

Deputy Chair Damian Murphy draws a direct line from Fr Wall's founding vision to the work that continues today:

"Every generation is entrusted with building on the work of those who came before it. Seventy years ago, Fr James Wall laid the foundations for an organisation that would strengthen Catholic organisations and communities through responsible financial stewardship. His vision has enabled schools, parishes, health and social services to flourish for seven decades. As CDF celebrates its 70th anniversary, we carry that legacy forward - ensuring Catholic organisations can continue to build on strong foundations, serve their communities and grow with confidence."

Thank you

CDF's 70th anniversary is not a celebration of an institution. It is a celebration of everyone who has made it possible; the clients and partners who have placed their trust in us, the clients whose savings have financed the buildings where communities gather, the staff who have served with dedication, and the Bishops and Church leaders who have given us the privilege of walking alongside them.

As Archbishop Peter A. Comensoli reflected in last year's Annual Report:

"What began humbly in 1956 has, seven decades later, become a vital expression of our Catholic life - steadfast in serving the Church and helping to build communities shaped by the Gospel."

For the parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes in Bayswater , the newly renovated Parish Hall is far more than a building. It is the fulfilment of a long-held dream; a place where a vibrant and growing Catholic community can finally come together, share life, and welcome others. Supported by a $1.85 million loan from CDF, the renovation has transformed what was once an ageing and inadequate space into a modern, welcoming hall that will serve the parish and wider Bayswater community for generations to come. A community that needed a home Our Lady of Lourdes Parish has been a cornerstone of Catholic life in Bayswater for more than 60 years, celebrating daily Mass throughout the week and welcoming between 450 and 600 parishioners and visitors across four weekend Masses. It is a community rich in faith, culture and connection, and one that had long outgrown its ability to gather together in a shared space. For Parish Priest Fr Sabu, taking on the renovation project was both a personal commitment and a responsibility to those who had built the parish before him.

When the San Damiano Creativity Hub was officially opened and blessed at St Francis Catholic College, Cobblebank , it marked far more than the completion of a new building. It represented the next chapter in a vision more than four decades in the making - one that has seen a small regional Catholic college grow into one of Melbourne's largest and fastest-growing Catholic secondary schools, while remaining firmly grounded in its Franciscan mission. CDF is proud to continue its longstanding partnership with St Francis Catholic College, supporting Stage 2 of the Cobblebank Campus with a $14.5 million loan, building on the earlier $18 million loan that helped establish the campus.
