Sharing the Joy of Christmas: Four Ways to Make a Difference This Season
November 4, 2025

This Advent season, CDF is inviting our community to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and participate in meaningful initiatives that bring hope, dignity, and joy to those who need it most.

Across our network of schools, parishes, healthcare and social services, vulnerable families and individuals are preparing for what should be the most wonderful time of the year - but for many, it's become increasingly difficult. The cost-of-living crisis has pushed countless people to the brink, leaving nothing for luxuries and, for some, even the necessities feel out of reach.

CDF is proud to stand alongside four client organisations this Christmas, each working tirelessly to ensure no one is left behind during the festive season.

Villa Maria Catholic Homes: 900+ Hampers of Hope

It's hard not to get caught up in the consumer-driven culture of Christmas, but the true meaning of the season shines brightly across  Villa Maria Catholic Homes (VMCH). Each year, VMCH relies on donations to ensure hundreds of vulnerable people receive a little joy through their Christmas Hamper Appeal.

This year marks VMCH's biggest hamper drive yet, with over 900+ people in need across their affordable homes, home care, and disability services. These hampers bring essential items and small comforts to people who might otherwise go without.

How CDF is supporting: CDF staff are collecting donations and volunteering their time to pack and deliver these vital hampers throughout November and early December.

St Mary's House of Welcome: 65 Years of Dignity and Support

For 65 years, St Mary's House of Welcome has been a beacon of hope for people experiencing homelessness in the heart of Melbourne. As a Specialist Access Point, they provide essential support to people facing homelessness, mental health challenges, and severe social isolation.

This December, St Mary's is hosting their annual BBQ for the Homeless, bringing warmth, food, and community to up to 200 people who might otherwise spend the festive season alone. They've also partnered with Brunetti Classico, Chocolatier Australia, and Bisko Bakehouse to offer a gingerbread fundraiser, with all proceeds supporting their Welcome Relief Meals Program that provides daily breakfast and lunch to homeless community members.

How CDF is supporting: CDF staff are volunteering at the BBQ for the Homeless in December, helping to prepare food, cook, and serve guests with dignity and care.

How you can help: Purchase gingerbread houses, DIY kits, chocolates, or shortbread through the festive fundraiser, or make a direct donation to support the St Mary's House of Welcome daily meal program.

MacKillop Family Services: Bringing Christmas Magic to Children in Care

Every child deserves the magic of Christmas morning. Each year, MacKillop Family Services works to deliver gifts to children and young people in their care across Australia -many of whom have experienced trauma, displacement, and hardship that no child should endure.

The Christmas Toy Appeal ensures these young people wake up to presents under the tree, experiencing the joy and wonder that every child deserves during the festive season.

How CDF is supporting: CDF staff are donating toys and volunteering at the Toy Drive Days in early December, helping to sort, wrap, and prepare gifts for distribution.

How you can help: Donate age-appropriate toys, books, or gift cards that will bring smiles to children and young people at the MacKillop Toy Drive. Or make a charitable donation to MacKillop Family Services.

CatholicCare Victoria: Restoring Dignity Through Choice

This Christmas, CDF is proud to stand alongside CatholicCare Victoria in supporting their Christmas Food Voucher Program, helping families and individuals across Victoria experience the dignity, joy, and hope of the season.

Through this initiative, every $50 donation provides a $50 food voucher to someone in need, empowering them to choose the meals that bring comfort, celebrate family traditions, and share in the spirit of Christmas. More than just food, these vouchers restore choice, dignity, and belonging for people who might otherwise feel left behind.

How CDF is supporting: CDF will match all donations dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000. That means every contribution goes twice as far, directly helping households put food on the table this Christmas. Every dollar you give becomes a dollar of hope, multiplied.

How you can help: Make a donation of any size to provide food vouchers to families in need. With CDF's matched giving, your impact is doubled. Donate to CatholicCare Victoria Christmas Food Voucher Program today.

Choose What Resonates With You

However you choose to participate this Advent season, whether through donating, purchasing, or simply spreading the word, you'll be sharing the joy of a CDF Christmas and bringing hope to those who need it most.

The true meaning of Christmas is all around us in the compassion, generosity, and care we extend to our most vulnerable neighbors. Together, we can ensure that everyone in our community experiences the dignity, warmth, and hope of this sacred season.

On 27 February 2026, a new chapter for Catholic education in Victoria began as community leaders, families and Church representatives gathered in Mount Duneed, Geelong, for the official sod-turning ceremony of Mary Glowrey Catholic Primary School . The moment marked more than the start of construction. It celebrated the beginning of a school community inspired by the life of Venerable Mary of the Sacred Heart Glowrey; a Victorian-born doctor, religious sister and missionary whose life was defined by faith, courage and service. Supported by a $10.5 million loan from Catholic Development Fund (CDF), the new project will deliver a vibrant new Catholic primary school for the rapidly growing Mount Duneed and Armstrong Creek communities in greater Geelong. When complete, the $21.6 million development will provide contemporary learning spaces designed to nurture both academic growth and the formation of young people in faith.

In modern Australia, Catholic organisations are called to act with integrity in a pluralist society that may not always prioritise the same values. Their core objectives—be it education, healthcare, or community and social services - generally reflect that identity; the ‘back-end’ operations that sustain them, however, may be subject to forces that detract from mission. A recent CDF Catholic Connect workshop, hosted by Catholic Development Fund (CDF) in partnership with Catholic Social Services Victoria (CSSV), challenged leaders to look deeper into how policies and processes reflect the Catholic mission. The session, ‘Aligning Organisational Practices with Mission’, explored how Catholic Social Teaching can be intentionally embedded across core operations, from procurement and investment to hiring and governance. Lessons and Learnings with Industry Experts Four panel and workshop presenters brought strong sector experience and deep insight: Tarang Jain ( Modern Slavery Liason Officer / Group Procurement Lead ESG, St Vincent’s Health Australia ) Melissa Halliday ( Community Development Project Coordinator, ACRATH ) Dr John Ballard (Board Director Mercy Education and Catholic Development Fund / Leadership and Governance Consultant) Anna Brazier ( Climate Justice Coordinator, Jesuit Social Services )
